MACHOs in a Flattened Halo

چکیده

If massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) are detected in ongoing searches, then τSMC/τLMC, the ratio of the optical depth toward the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, will be a robust indicator of the flattening of the Galactic dark matter halo. For a spherical halo, τSMC/τLMC is about 1.45, independent of details of the shape of the Galactic rotation curve, the assumed mass of the Galactic disk and spheroid, and the truncation distance (if any) of the dark halo. For an E6 halo (axis ratio c/a = 0.4), the ratio of optical depths is τSMC/τLMC ∼ 0.95, again independent of assumptions about Galactic parameters. This ratio can be measured with a precision as good as ∼ 10% depending on the typical mass of the MACHOs. If the halo is highly flattened (e.g., E6) and closely truncated (e.g., at twice the solar galactocentric radius), then the optical depth toward the LMC can be reduced by a factor of about two. For these extreme parameters, and the assumption of a heavy Galactic disk and spheroid, the upper limit of the MACHO mass range to which ongoing experiments are sensitive is reduced from O(10)M⊙ to O(10)M⊙. Machos in the Solar Neighbourhood

We rediscuss the question of what fraction of the population of MACHOs in the halo of the Milky Way might be in the form of halo dwarfs, because recent determinations indicate masses of the MACHOs, which are typical for such stars. For this purpose we have analyzed the Third Catalogue of Nearby Stars and identified the subdwarfs and a high velocity white dwarf in the solar neighbourhood. The lo...

Halo stars in the immediate solar neighbourhood

We have searched the Fourth Catalogue of Nearby Stars for halo stars and identified 15 subdwarfs and a high velocity white dwarf in the solar neighbourhood. This searchwasmotivated mainly by the recent determinations of MACHOmasses of about 0.5M , which are typical for halo dwarfs. The local mass density of these stars is 1.5·10−4M pc−3, which is only 3% of the current estimate of the local mas...

The Minimum Total Mass of MACHOs and Halo Models of the Galaxy

If the density distribution ρ(r) of MACHOs is spherically symmetric with respect to the Galactic center, it is shown that the minimal total mass M min of the MACHOs is 1.7×10M⊙τ −6.7 where τ −6.7 is the optical depth (τ) toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the unit of 2×10−7. If ρ(r) is a decreasing function of r, it is proved that M min is 5.6× 10M⊙τ −6.7 . Several spherical and axially...

Spatially varying mass function of MACHOs in the galactic halo and interpretation of microlensing results

The gravitational microlensing experiments in the direction of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) predict a large amount of white dwarfs (∼ 20%) filling the galactic halo. However, the predicted white dwarfs have not been observed at the galactic halo. To interpret the microlensing results and resolving the mentioned problems, we use the hypothesis of spatially varying mass function of MACHOs, propos...

Is the Galactic Halo Baryonic ?

Recent observations of microlensing events in the Large Magel-lanic Cloud suggest that a sizeable fraction of the galactic halo is in the form of Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs) with mass less than about 0.1M ⊙. Here we argue that molecular clouds (mainly of H 2) located in the galactic halo can contribute substantially to its total mass. We outline a scenario in which dark ...
